Spelman College Visits Amani Women Center

A classroom without walls

Some of the best classrooms have no walls. Recently, Amani Women Center had the joy of welcoming Dr. Dorian Brown Crosby and a group of incredible students from Spelman College. They engaged as learners ready to listen, ask questions, and connect with the lived experiences of refugee and immigrant communities.

A partnership more than ten years strong

For more than 10 years, AWC has proudly partnered with Dr. Brown Crosby’s service-learning courses, connecting students with the realities and resilience of the communities we serve. The course is the cornerstone of Spelman College’s Refugee and Forced Migration Studies minor, giving students meaningful, hands-on learning experiences with community organizations. Each visiting class brings fresh curiosity and thoughtful questions, and each leaves with a deeper understanding of what refugee and immigrant women carry, build, and lead.

Conversations that matter

During the visit, we enjoyed sharing our mission, programs, and impact while engaging in meaningful conversations about community leadership and social change. These are exactly the kinds of exchanges that make community-engaged learning so powerful: students see that the women of Clarkston are not a case study, but teachers in their own right. Their visit allows them to see Refugee women as makers, entrepreneurs, and leaders whose knowledge shapes real solutions. Community-engaged learning reminds us that the people closest to an issue are its greatest experts.

Growing the next generation of changemakers

Partnerships like this one plant seeds. The students who visit today may become the advocates, researchers, and community leaders of tomorrow, carrying forward a belief that lasting change is built alongside communities.
