CFGA Support Helps 21 Families Through Housing Crisis

Keeping Families Housed!

With generous support from the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta (CFGA), Amani Women Center received a $30,000 rental assistance grant to help families in our community experiencing urgent housing instability. Through our Healthy Families Program and our Amani Community Ambassadors, AWC used these funds to assist 21 families who were behind on rent or facing eviction because of circumstances such as job loss, reduced work hours, domestic violence, medical hardships, and other unexpected financial challenges.

*For families facing financial hardship, one unexpected setback can quickly put housing at risk. *

“One family came to us on the brink of eviction. The household included seven children and two adults living on one income. When the father’s work hours were reduced, the family began falling behind on rent. Within a short period of time, they received an eviction notice. The mother shared that she was lying awake at night worrying about where a family of nine could possibly go. She feared that they might have to separate and stay with different relatives and worried about what losing their home would mean for her children. Our team worked closely with the family, helped them navigate the rental assistance process, answered their questions, and ensured the necessary documentation was completed. With support from the CFGA grant, the family’s overdue rent was paid and the eviction was stopped.”

The impact went far beyond paying a bill.   

 The children were able to remain in their home, continue attending their school, and maintain a sense of stability during an already difficult time. Their parents were given the breathing room they needed to begin rebuilding financially.”

At Amani Women Center, housing stability is an important part of overall family well-being, families also received resource navigation, public benefits assistance, other referrals, and connections to additional community services. For the 21 families supported through this grant, rental assistance provided more than temporary financial relief.  This support is a powerful example of what can happen when philanthropy and trusted community organizations work together to respond to families when they need help most.
