This July, Amani Women Center looks back on our participation in the SDG 16 Conference at the United Nations, and on what it means for grassroots communities to be recognized as equal partners in building a more just world.

It was an honor to take part in conversations centered on SDG 16, the Sustainable Development Goal focused on peace, justice, and strong institutions, which serves as the foundation for achieving all the other goals. The through-line of those conversations echoed a belief we hold closely: lasting progress requires recognizing grassroots communities not as beneficiaries, but as equal partners and co-creators of sustainable change.

Inspired by women leading the way

We were especially inspired by the leadership of Leonie Mutoni, Coordinator of the African Centre of Excellence on Access to Justice, and Ms. Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi, Chair of the United Nations Committee of Experts on Public Administration and Chancellor of Nelson Mandela University. Their dedication and vision are a powerful reminder that inclusive leadership is essential to building more just, peaceful, and equitable societies.
